From the obituary in the Guardian: “In the course of a rare interview in 2004, he admitted that his own personal favourites of his films were Winter Light, Persona and Cries and Whispers. However, he added that he now rarely watched any of his movies because he found them “too depressing”.”

If I were to point out Bergman’s greates asset as a filmmaker I’d choose his use of music, sound and silence in his films. Still, I can’t understand his elevated status as “the greates”…

An artist without an ego is a dabbler, a hobbyist, a wannabe.

What I’ve always liked about Bergman’s films are their bleakness, their austerity and that he put character front and center. True, he had Nykvist, a genius with a camera, but that added layers and depth to the images, the stories were Bergman’s. A lifelong failed novelist, the screen was his page and he filled it with great words and images. Give me him over a poseur like Antonini any day.

Congratulations! Seems like you made the right choice for yourself. I made much the same some 25 yrs. ago. I assisted for two very successful photographers in NYC and saw what they still had to go thru to get work- and then to get paid. Not the natural born salesman, I wisely said thanks, no thanks. Like everything else in life, your decision undoubtedly has its ups and downs… Good Luck!
